Topographical Light Paintings

Photographer Janne Parviainen has been experimenting with a fun form of photographic light painting that resembles 3D topographical maps. Exposure times can take over 30 minutes as he carefully moves through the room with a light “tracing” every surface and object.

Call Parade is an ongoing public art project in São Paulo sponsored by Brazilian telecommunications firm Vivo, that paired 100 artists with 100 street-side phone booths giving them free reign to transform the peculiar hooded fixtures into anything imaginable. The exhibition has proven to be extremely popular and Brazilian photographer Mariane Borgomani set out to capture a number of the phones, my favorite of which is the painted day/night treatment above by artist Maramgoní. You can see a gallery of all 100 phones here.

In creating his senior thesis exhibition, art student Yasutoki Kariya turned for inspiration to Newton’s Cradle – the iconic desktop toy that demonstrates Newton’s third law of motion. Originally created by the actor Simon Prebble back in 1967, Newton’s Cradle succeeded in visualizing momentum – the law that states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Photographer Marcin Sobas captures mesmerizing images of agricultural fields and hills of Tuscany, Italy and the Czech Republic. Sobas approach is unique in that instead of capturing the entirety of the landscape he instead uses a telephoto zoom lens allowing him to take tightly cropped shots that appear both immense in scale but extremely specific in scope.

As one of the oldest books to stay constantly in print (2000 years), Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” is eaten up regularly by bankers, entrepreneurs, PR moguls and footballers who take themselves very seriously. The prose is dated and things like “build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across” can’t be applied quite as usefully to everyday situations as a lot of people make out, but the book is a great read nonetheless and gives you an insight into the mind of one of history’s greatest combatant minds.

Writer Kelly Roman has joined forces with illustrator Michael DeWeese to make a modern day version of The Art of War in the form of a highly detailed graphic novel. The setting has been changed from the Chinese empires of 475BC, to a futuristic world where China has of course taken over as the infallible global power. Wall Street is no longer a den of inequity for high rolling bankers and business investors, but is now a warzone of continuous battle. Sun Tzu’s ancient teachings unfurl to set the narrative amongst the crumbling dystopia of China Town, money grabbing corporate gargoyles and an almighty test of humanity.

Samsara is the first film by director and cinematographer Ron Ficke (KoyaanisqatsiBaraka) in nearly 20 years. Following in the footsteps of his earlier work, it will be completely devoid of dialogue and text, relying solely on compelling visuals shot on 70mm film. Do yourself a favor and watch the trailer below full-screen.
